Because school begins in the first two weeks of August, we’ve already provided school supplies to Birmingham students (we used money you put in the offering plate each week)! We’ve given 200 packed backpacks to ELI Thrive. We have also sent much needed supplies to Grace Klein Community as they share school supplies with 570 students.
Ready to do more? Missions Coordinator Brooke Wolde is working with local schools to figure out the best way to help hungry kids – can we stock and manage food pantries in their buildings? Interested in helping Brooke with this initiative? Reach out!
You can also jump in and be a tutor/mentor at WE Learn through Urban Ministry:
Urban Ministry is a faith-based nonprofit focused on working with the residents of West End to build a thriving community. As an urban mission of the United Methodist Church, they work closely with sister organization, Community Church Without Walls, to extend compassion and opportunities for wholeness to everyone in the West End community. They do this by listening to the community, engaging their gifts and strengths, and building programs that affirm their dignity as children of God.
WE Learn is an after-school tutoring/mentorship program run by Urban Ministry in West End run by Rev. Caitlin Harper. Under Caitlin’s leadership, volunteers feed kids a great snack, help them with homework, and then enrich their afternoon with art, gardening, music, and more.
If you were a tutor/mentor last year, it’s time to get reconnected with Hemphill Elementary students! If you haven’t volunteered with WE Learn, know that this ministry runs on volunteers. Your love, your time, and your care for these students is the number one element that keeps the train rolling! Urban Ministry asks that all new volunteers take a Safe Sanctuaries Training. WE Learn operates Mondays-Thursdays 2-5:30 p.m. WE Learn is located at 1229 Cotton Avenue SW, Birmingham, 35211.
